The Canterbury Muslim Community Trust (CMCT) has established the Muslim Community Fund.

This fund proudly supports the Muslim community with a priority focus on education.

The fund has been established to contribute towards educational scholarships for members of the Muslim community in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

The aim is to empower individuals to pursue their dreams by providing access to valuable educational opportunities.

The intention of the fund is to support a variety of educational needs, not limited to secondary, tertiary and further education. The focus of the scholarship will be set annually by the CMCT Board of Trustees.

THE HISTORY

Founded in 2025, the CMCT Muslim Community Fund draws its inspiration from Aotearoa New Zealand’s collective spirit of unity, compassion, and commitment to peace, diversity, and inclusion. Building on CMCT’s grassroots approach to supporting education, wellbeing, and cultural initiatives since 2014, the fund strives to create a lasting impact within the community.

CMCT has established this fund to honour the outpouring of compassionate support received from the New Zealand community following the acts of terror committed on the Muslim community of Ōtautahi Christchurch in 2019.

CMCT received donations from individuals and businesses to support the affected community. Whilst the majority of funds were distributed to those in need in the immediate aftermath of the attacks, the level of giving was such that a residual balance remained.

The CMCT Trustees voted to open the Muslim Community Fund to ensure the longevity of this generosity.

CMCT welcomes donations to enable the Fund to expand and deepen the impact of this scholarship today and for future generations.

The Muslim Community Fund will run its inaugural scholarship round later in 2025. For further information, contact the CMCT here.

"The Islamic History competition was not only a chance for me to visit the past, but an opportunity to gain insights from what others have learnt. The more I knew, the more I saw how our history highlighted the strength and potential we carry when our faith in Allah is strong."
